COLLE DEI VENTI PECORINO TERRE DI CHIETI
Varieties: 100% pecorino grapes
Pecorino, the grape variety, is so named due to the resemblance of the grape bunches to a head of a sheep and has nothing to do with the cheese. Colle dei Venti translates as the Hill of Breeze.
The Pecorino is a fabulous white wine and relatively unknown, as it rarely makes the export market. It displays a beautiful lemon gold star bright appearance and offers aromas of mango, banana and other tropical fruits. The palate is beautifully textured and richly-fruited with more tropical fruit flavors, pleasant acidity, and a long finish.
Caldora is a young partnership between visionary Valentino Sciotti, renowned winemaker Mario Ercolino, and one of the largest cooperative wineries in the Abruzzo. Total holdings consist of around 1200 ha, but only the best 200 ha are selected, vinified, and bottled under the Caldora name.
The majority of these plantings are located within the Ortona area in a microclimate that runs through a 25 km band between the Adriatic coast and the 3000m high Mount Maiella. The first bottling, with an updated winery facility coupled to an avant-garde vineyard management system, captured the essence of Caldora: maximum fruit expression in a top quality, reasonably priced wine that everyone can enjoy.
A great example of this style is the Pecorino, named after the grape cluster’s resemblance to a sheep’s head - not the cheese. It is highly aromatic with an excellent structure, but rarely makes it to the export market because of naturally low yields.
The results speak for themselves. Opening a bottle of Caldora wine is one of the most predictable hedonistic experiences known to humankind, at least for wine lovers who share Ercolino's taste for intense and deep fruit in their wines.
Wine tasting note: Lemons, nectarines, minerals, lime rind, orange pith, fresh, clean and quite full. Summery. Long lasting, dry, interesting, complex. Delicious. Alcohol 13% |

GRECO DI TUFO D.O.C.G. LAVA TERRE DEL VULCANO
2004 Feudi di San Gregorio Cutizzi (Greco di Tufo), Campania

FIANO DI AVELLINO DOCG
LAVA, TERRE DEL VULCANO
CAMPANIA
AREA OF PRODUCTION: Avellino
Sub region: Fiano di Avellino
Grape Variety 100% Fiano
ENOLOGO Mario Ercolino (Feudi di San Gregorio)
Feudi di San Gregorio Fiano di Avellino, DOCG, Campania
Light gold in the glass with a greenish hue, this wine has a very distinct and strange nose of smoke, kerosene, and wet leaves. In the mouth it is tart with acidity (in a good way) and continues on an expected flavor profile with light stone fruit flavors mixes with elements of shoe polish, kerosene, and smoking peat. While undoubtedly foreign to most palates, this wine has got a lot of personality and is very tasty, more so than the adjectives above might have you believe
FIANO DI AVELLINO DOCG
Produced with Candida, Parolise and Sorbo Serpico grapes, Fiano di Avellino has an intense straw-yellow colour with greenish shimmer.
The aroma is intense and persistent. Distinct Mediterranean scents of fresh chamomile flowers and fruit – from a local peach variant to a more complex candied orange.
The characteristic smooth notes of the grape are balanced by a lively freshness and mineral hints.
Bottle size:
75 cl
Bottles per case:
6
Style:
Fruity Dry Whites
Grapes:
Fiano
Description:
The Fiano di Avellino is straw yellow in colour, with intense fruit and fresh, floral perfumes. This wine has a youthful vivacity and zingy acidity on the finish which keeps it fresh, and acts as a delicious foil to the waxy, fruit character on the palate.
The Vesevo estate is located in the high, mountainous area of Avellino, in the Irpinian hills in Campania. The vineyards are situated at between 450 and 550 metres above sea level, in the path of cool breezes blowing off the Bay of Naples. This same breeze has, over the centuries, blown volcanic ash from Vesuvius inland to give the soil here a poor, volcanic character. Indeed, the name Vesevo is the old name for Vesuvius.
Despite being so far south, this is one of the latest regions in Italy to harvest. |

AMARONE
ALPHA-ZETA
Amarone is made by fermenting dried grapes. Selected superior whole bunches are picked onto racks and transferred immediately to a drying room where they are left to dry for a number of months. The aim is to realise in the finished wine the intensity of colour, flavour and tannin in the dried grapes. This example is dry, full-bodied and full of interesting, complex flavours on the nose and the palate. It is rich, has great intensity and a long, velvety finish.
Amarone della Valpolicella DOC
Pronunciation Ahma-ROH-nay VAL-paul-ee-chello
Type Red
Winery Alpha Zeta
Region Veneto, Italy
Oenologist Matt Thomson
Overview
Alpha Zeta was started in 1999 working with leading New Zealand winemaker, Matt Thomson, set out to produce a range of modern, fruit driven wines from the hills outside Verona. The aim was to work with growers (rather than buy bulk wine, which is standard among most wines from Verona at this price) to obtain ripe grapes (by reducing yields and picking later) and then, using Matt's expertise, preserve these flavours in the finished wines. The result is a realisation of the potential inherent in Veronese viniculture.
The hills outside Verona. We selected several vineyards in excellent sites where the growers had reduced the crop quite significantly. The soil is a mixture of clay and limestone with good drainage. The vineyards are south-facing, which makes them warmer than other parts of Valpolicella.
Careful vinification in the modern winery has resulted in a clean and modern styled Amarone.
